KENNETH STEELY, FORMER GENERAL COUNSEL OF THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, JOINS MAYNARD’S GROWING CORRECTIONAL LITIGATION PRACTICE GROUP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 4, 2020) — Kenneth Steely, the former General Counsel of the third-largest state correctional agency in the country, joins Maynard’s Correctional Litigation Practice Group as Of Counsel. Kenneth will represent state and county correctional agencies and vendors supporting correctional agencies in federal, state, and administrative actions.
“Our team has a great deal of experience in correctional litigation across the country, but Kenneth fills a void that we have wanted to fill for some time now with an attorney who has a depth of in-house corrections experience,” said Bill Lunsford, Chair of the Correctional Litigation Practice Group. “In his tenure in Florida, Kenneth encountered practically every issue common to the corrections environment and we are excited to see how our clients will benefit from Kenneth’s unique expertise and experience.” Kenneth’s first-hand experience in Florida increases the Correctional Litigation group’s efforts in supporting, defending, and empowering correctional agencies and officials across the United States as the group continues to expand its national reach.
As General Counsel of the Florida Department of Corrections, Kenneth served on the executive leadership team assisting in crisis management, emergency preparedness, and critical decisions impacting all aspects of the agency. Kenneth managed all litigation, including actions in administrative, state, and federal courts for tort claims, civil rights claims, injunctive claims, employment actions, constitutional claims, contract and procurement disputes, and property disputes.
Prior to that, Kenneth worked as Special Counsel for a national law firm in gaming law, banking law, commercial litigation, election law, and governmental affairs. Kenneth began his legal career as Special Assistant Attorney General in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. Before that, Kenneth served in the United States Army.
Kenneth obtained his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law and earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
