Mobile is Alabama’s third largest city with a population of slightly more than 195,000 residents. The city sits on Mobile Bay and is Alabama’s only saltwater port. The Port of Mobile is the twelfth largest port in the United States.
Mobile has a rich history dating back to its founding as a French colony. While New Orleans to the West may be best known for its Mardi Gras celebration, Mobile lays claim to the oldest organized Carnival celebrations, dating back to the 18th century.
The port plays a large role in Mobile’s industry and is home to several shipbuilding yards, including Austal and BAE Systems. A recent addition to Mobile’s industry is the arrival of European airplane manufacturing giant Airbus.
Mobile is home to the University of South Alabama and Spring Hill College.
