Overview

Madison is an Associate in Maynard Nexsen’s Government Investigations & White Collar Defense Section, focusing her practice on conducting internal investigations; helping her clients respond to grand-jury subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and attorney-general subpoenas; assisting clients with designing, implementing, and maintaining effective compliance programs; and assisting with representation of criminal defendants in federal court appointed through the Criminal Justice Act. She is also a member of the Firm’s appellate subgroup.

Prior to joining Maynard Nexsen in 2022, Madison served as a law clerk for Judge Karon O. Bowdre of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District Court of Alabama and Justice Jay Mitchell of the Supreme Court of Alabama.

In 2020, Madison earned her J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law. There, she served as Editor in Chief of the Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice, publishing a student note on disciplinary sanctions as grounds for departure under the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and organizing a symposium on issues in federal sentencing. She also mentored 1L students as a Kirgis Fellow and acted a student attorney for the Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse clinic, conducting capital defense research and representing parole-eligible clients before the Virginia Parole Board.

She received her B.A., cum laude, in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from The King’s College in New York City. Before law school, Madison completed a writing fellowship project focused on criminal-justice reform and rehabilitation efforts as part of the Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship.

Experience

Government Investigations

  • Managed 200,000-page document production in response to grand-jury subpoena in federal public corruption case. Assisted with witness interviews in same case.
  • Has managed responses federal grand-jury subpoenas and CIDs, SEC document request packages, and Alabama Attorney General subpoenas, as well as conducted document review for internal company investigations.
  • Has drafted investigative plans to help clients understand scope and trajectory of investigation.

Compliance

  • Assisted in review of company’s compliance program.

Indicted Criminal Matters

  • Successfully defended client in bond revocation hearing. Bond was maintained, and client was able to spend the holidays with his family.
  • Represented client convicted of conspiracy to commit mail fraud at federal criminal sentencing, arguing for probationary sentence. Client received probation.
  • Assisted in negotiating favorable plea agreement for client by attacking prior convictions’ categorization as “crimes of violence.”

Civil Litigation

  • Deposed multiple witness in defamation and tortious interference case. Second-chaired 30(b)(6) deposition.
  • Drafted a wide range of civil motions, including motion to compel arbitration, Daubert motion, and opposition to motion to strike.
  • Settled contract disputes ranging from $8,000 to $64,000.

Appeals

  • Assisted in drafting petition for writ of mandamus relating to unwarranted discovery sanctions relating to 30(b)(6) deposition. Alabama Supreme Court granted the writ.
